Vladimir Putin – and formally – cuts ties with international law after Russia’s withdrawal from the Council of Europe, as he signed the law terminating the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights in Russia.

The Russian president signed into law the approved bills for non-compliance with the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Russia, according to the corresponding documents published on the official state portal on Saturday, TASS reports.

Thus, the ECtHR rulings against Russia issued after 15 March 2022 (the date on which Russia announced its withdrawal from the Council of Europe) will not apply, while compensation payments under the ECtHR rulings will only be made. in rubles and only in accounts in Russian banks.

However, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office will be able to make payments in accordance with the decisions of the ECHR until January 1, 2023.

The Russian State Duma last week approved two bills that end the ECHR’s jurisdiction in the Russian Federation.

In fact, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia’s withdrawal from the organization represented an opportunity to reinstate the death penalty, which is prohibited by Council of Europe rules.
