Russia’s Supreme Court has ruled that a\u00a0Jehovah’s Witnesses website and\u00a0three of\u00a0the religious movement’s books are extremist, RAPSI legal news agency reported Wednesday, citing the\u00a0court.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0Supreme Court’s ruling follows its approval in\u00a0November of\u00a0the Samara region’s ban of\u00a0the group, Russia’s first region-wide ban of\u00a0the movement.<\/p>\n
Jehovah’s Witnesses have long encountered difficulties with Russian authorities and\u00a0have repeatedly been barred from\u00a0circulating their literature.<\/p>\n
In\u00a02004, a\u00a0Moscow court banned a\u00a0local Jehovah’s Witnesses group, accusing it of\u00a0recruiting children, prompting believers to\u00a0abandon their families, inciting suicide and\u00a0preventing believers from\u00a0accepting medical treatment, RAPSI reported.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0ruling was eventually overturned in\u00a02010 by\u00a0the European Court of\u00a0Human Rights, which ordered Russia to\u00a0pay the\u00a0defendants 70,000 euros ($86,000).<\/p>\n
More recently, in\u00a0January, a\u00a0court in\u00a0the southern city of\u00a0Kurgan ruled that the\u00a0movement’s brochures were extremist, according to\u00a0RAPSI.<\/p>\n
Between 2009 and\u00a02013, various Russian regional courts found 68 Jehovah’s Witnesses publications to\u00a0be extremist, according to\u00a0Lenta.ru.<\/p>\n
