{"id":2903,"date":"2017-05-27T18:17:06","date_gmt":"2017-05-27T18:17:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jwforum.net\/news\/2017\/05\/27\/danish-man-arrested-in-russian-raid-on-jehovahs-witness-service\/"},"modified":"2021-08-18T10:25:29","modified_gmt":"2021-08-18T07:25:29","slug":"danish-man-arrested-in-russian-raid-on-jehovahs-witness-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jwforum.net\/portal\/danish-man-arrested-in-russian-raid-on-jehovahs-witness-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Danish man arrested in Russian raid on Jehovah&#8217;s Witness service"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>A Danish national was arrested this week during a police raid in the central city of Oryol, Russia, during a worship service by members of the Jehovah&#8217;s Witnesses, which Russia recently banned as an extremist organization.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Dane was identified as Dennis Christensen, according to a spokesman for the religious organization in New York.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Christensen was picked up in the raid Thursday night by Oryol police and agents of the FSB, the successor to the KGB.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The officers also confiscated a Bible, religious literature, laptops and hard drives, according to the SOVA Center for Information and Analysis, a Russian non-profit group that tracks human rights issues in the country.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Russia&#8217;s Supreme Court last month formally banned Jehovah&#8217;s Witnesses as an extremist organization and ordered the state to seize its property in Russia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Interfax news agency quoted Justice Ministry attorney Svetlana Borisova in court as saying the religious group \u00e2\u20ac\u0153poses a threat to the rights of the citizens, public order and public security.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/div>\n<div>\u00c2\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/irf6emB.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"534\" height=\"401\" \/>\u00c2\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Borisova also said the Jehovah\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Witnesses\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 opposition to blood transfusions violates Russian health care laws.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Documents posted by the Oryol region district court said Christensen was accused of committing a &#8220;serious crime&#8221; under the laws pertaining to an extremist organization and ordered held until trial.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Yaroslav Sivulsky, a lawyer for the local group, told the Russian website Mediazone that Christensen was arrested only because he was reading the Bible along with other worshippers, Radio Liberty reported.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>David A. Semonian, a spokesman at the Jehovah&#8217;s Witnesses\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 world headquarters, said followers worldwide &#8220;are now even more concerned about our fellow worshippers in Russia.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;These disturbing events are clearly aftereffects of the Russian Supreme Court\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s unjust decision against us,&#8221; he said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Jehovah&#8217;s Witnesses, which has some 175,000 followers in that country, first legally registered as a religious group in Russia in 1991 and re-registered in 1999, according to the organization&#8217;s international website.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In February, investigators inspected the headquarters of the Jehovah&#8217;s Witnesses in St. Petersburg, the independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta reported.
