Both had been arrested and imprisoned in the summer of 2008 for their religious beliefs and suffered through nearly a decade of harsh prison conditions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p2\" class=\"p2 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: center; margin-bottom: 1.25em; margin-top: 1.25em; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assetsnffrgf-a.akamaihd.net\/assets\/m\/802018863\/univ\/art\/802018863_univ_lsr_lg.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"325\" border=\"0\" \/>\u00c2<\/p>\n<div class=\"lsrBannerCaptionText figcaption\" style=\"color: #858585; margin: 0px; clear: both; padding: 0.5em; display: table-cell; font-size: 16px;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-top: auto; line-height: 1.45;\">Habtemichael Tesfamariam with his wife, Leterberhan Bezabih, before his imprisonment<span style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 19.28px; color: #333333;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"p3\" class=\"p3 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 1.25em; margin-top: 1.25em; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent;\">Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Tesfamariam died suddenly at the age of 76 in the Mai Serwa Prison on January\u00c2\u00a03,\u00c2\u00a02018. His fellow prisoners believe that he suffered a stroke. Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Tesfamariam was born in 1942 in Adi Yakulu, Mendefera, Eritrea. He became one of Jehovah\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Witnesses in 1970 and refused to compromise his faith, despite unjust imprisonment and maltreatment. He is survived by his wife, Leterberhan Bezabih; four sons; and three daughters.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p4\" class=\"p4 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 1.25em; margin-top: 1.25em; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent;\">Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Mekonen died at the age of 77 in the Mai Serwa Prison on March\u00c2\u00a06,\u00c2\u00a02018. His fellow prisoners believe that he died of kidney failure. Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Mekonen was born in 1940 in the village of Kudo Felasi in southern Eritrea. He became a Witness well over 55\u00c2\u00a0years ago and, like Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Tesfamariam, refused to compromise his faith, even though he was imprisoned without cause and mistreated. He is survived by his wife, Mihret Ellias, as well as a son and a daughter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section2\" class=\"section\" style=\"font-family: 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Noto Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', sans-serif; font-size: 19.28px;\">\n<h2 id=\"p5\" class=\"p5 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify; color: #555555; line-height: 1.25; margin: 1em 0px 0.5em; font-size: 1.74969em; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent;\">Unjust Arrest and Abuse<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pGroup\">\n<p id=\"p6\" class=\"p6 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 1.25em; margin-top: 1.25em; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent;\">Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Mekonen was at home when authorities arrested him without charges in July\u00c2\u00a02008, and Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Tesfamariam was also at home when he was arrested in August\u00c2\u00a02008. Both were soon placed in the notorious Meitir Prison Camp, in the desert north of Asmara, where they endured harsh and inhumane conditions. For special punishment, authorities held Witness prisoners from October\u00c2\u00a02011 through August\u00c2\u00a02012 in a half-buried building described as the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153underground.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d There the prisoners suffered through the brutal summer heat without adequate food or water. Some experienced long-term health problems as a result.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p7\" class=\"p7 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 1.25em; margin-top: 1.25em; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent;\">In 2017, authorities transferred the Witnesses who were imprisoned at the Meitir Camp to the Mai Serwa Prison, where they are allowed to receive food packages from relatives and to obtain medical treatment when critically ill. The prisoners welcomed the transfer to a less severe prison environment, but Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Tesfamariam and Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Mekonen never fully recovered from their earlier mistreatment.<\/p>\n<div id=\"f1\" class=\"south_left\" style=\"margin: 2em 0px; float: none; clear: both;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/assetsnffrgf-a.akamaihd.net\/assets\/m\/802018863\/univ\/art\/802018863_univ_cnt_1_xl.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"south_left\" src=\"https:\/\/assetsnffrgf-a.akamaihd.net\/assets\/m\/802018863\/univ\/art\/802018863_univ_cnt_1_lg.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"figcaption\" style=\"color: #858585; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-top: 0.75em; clear: both;\">\n<p id=\"p13\" class=\"p13 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-top: auto; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; line-height: 1.45;\">Habtemichael Mekonen and his wife, Mihret Ellias, before his imprisonment<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"p8\" class=\"p8 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 1.25em; margin-top: 1.25em; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent;\">Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Tesfamariam and Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Mekonen are not the first Witnesses to die in an Eritrean prison or shortly after their release. Because of inhumane prison conditions and mistreatment, two other Witnesses died while in prison, and three other Witnesses died soon after being discharged. At least seven Witnesses who were released from prison some years ago still suffer serious health issues that are directly related to their prison experience. Fifty-three Witnesses are still imprisoned in Eritrea for their faith, including Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Tesfamariam\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s brother, Tareke.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section3\" class=\"section\" style=\"font-family: 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Noto Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, 'Arial Unicode MS', sans-serif; font-size: 19.28px;\">\n<h2 id=\"p9\" class=\"p9 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify; color: #555555; line-height: 1.25; margin: 1em 0px 0.5em; font-size: 1.74969em; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent;\">Persecution Constitutes \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a Crime Against Humanity\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pGroup\">\n<p id=\"p10\" class=\"p10 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 1.25em; margin-top: 1.25em; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent;\">On June\u00c2\u00a08,\u00c2\u00a02016, the United Nation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Human Rights Council published a report based on the findings of the Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in Eritrea (COIE), which the council established to investigate human rights violations in Eritrea. The COIE urged Eritrea to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153respect freedom of religion or belief\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153put an end to the practice of arbitrary arrest and detention of individuals based on their religious beliefs, in particular followers of specific religious groups, such as Jehovah\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Witnesses, .\u00c2\u00a0.\u00c2\u00a0. and release immediately and unconditionally all those unlawfully and arbitrarily detained.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The COIE concluded that Eritrea\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s persecution of individuals based on their religion constitutes \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a crime against humanity.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p id=\"p11\" class=\"p11 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 1.25em; margin-top: 1.25em; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent;\">Jehovah\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Witnesses hope that the recent death of Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Tesfamariam and of Mr.\u00c2\u00a0Mekonen will not go unnoticed by the international community and that these tragedies will move fair-minded Eritrean officials to take action in behalf of those unjustly imprisoned for their faith.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p11\" class=\"p11 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 1.25em; margin-top: 1.25em; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent;\">https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/news\/legal\/by-region\/eritrea\/elderly-jehovahs-witnesses-die-eritrean-prison\/\u00c2<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two of Jehovah\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Witnesses, Habtemichael Tesfamariam and Habtemichael Mekonen, died in the Mai Serwa Prison near Asmara in early 2018.
