Cyberbullies can at once anonymously reach their victims in their own homes via cellphone or computer. As a result, victims report feeling hopeless, isolated and even suicidal, according to experts. What can parents do to protect their kids? Taking an interest in their children\u2019s online world can make a difference, says the National Parent Teacher Association.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This interest does not necessarily require parents to become tech experts. Instead, the federal\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stopbullying.gov\/\">stopbullying.gov<\/a>\u00a0site advises parents to watch for subtle clues that something is wrong, such as their child becoming withdrawn, hiding their screen when others are nearby or reacting emotionally to what\u2019s happening on their device.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Talking with kids openly \u2014 and often \u2014 helps, too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe more you talk to your children about bullying, the more comfortable they will be telling you if they see or experience it,\u201d UNICEF says in its online tips for parents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the many ways the Canzanos said they foster open communication is by sharing a device-free meal each evening with their children and listening patiently as they freely express themselves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAs parents, we try not to overreact,\u201d Yvonne said. \u201cWe try not to act too upset if they tell us about a situation at school, so they will feel free to continue confiding in us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They said they\u2019ve also found that instead of imposing strict rules on their children\u2019s use of devices, they give them principles to think about and apply, drawing on their faith as Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe try to teach them Bible principles and not just get those principles into their head but also into their heart,\u201d Barak said. \u201cAnd that way, not only will they know what to do in a cyberbullying situation, they\u2019ll know what to do in any situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the families\u2019 go-to resources is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jw.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jw.org<\/a>, the official website of Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses. The couple said a series of short, animated videos such as \u201cBe Social Network Smart,\u201d \u201cWho\u2019s in Control \u2014 You or Your Devices,\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s a Real Friend?\u201d and \u201cBeat a Bully Without Using Your Fists,\u201d were especially helpful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While remote learning during the pandemic lowered reported instances of bullying, parents fear that, for some students, being back at school means back to being bullied.
