(<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/matthew\/20\/#v40020028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"40020028\">Matthew 20:28;<\/a><a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/1-corinthians\/11\/#v46011024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"46011024\">\u00a01\u00a0Corinthians 11:24<\/a>) The observance is not a sacrament, or a religious practice that imparts merit such as grace or the forgiveness of sins.<span id=\"footnotesource1\" class=\"refID\">\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"footnoteLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/jehovahs-witnesses\/faq\/lords-supper\/#footnote1\" data-anchor=\"#footnote1\">*<\/a>\u00a0The Bible teaches that our sins can be forgiven, not by a religious rite, but only through faith in Jesus.\u200b\u2014<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/romans\/3\/#v45003025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"45003025\">Romans 3:\u200b25;<\/a><a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/1-john\/2\/#v62002001-v62002002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"62002001-62002002\">\u00a01\u00a0John 2:\u200b1,\u00a02<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section3\" class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2 id=\"p5\" class=\"p5 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"5\">How often?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pGroup\">\n<p id=\"p6\" class=\"p6 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"6\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"3\">\u00a0<\/span>Jesus commanded his disciples to commemorate the Lord\u2019s Evening Meal, but he did not specifically say how often. (<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/luke\/22\/#v42022019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"42022019\">Luke 22:19<\/a>) Some feel that it should be observed monthly, while others observe it weekly, daily, several times each day, or as often as a person feels is appropriate.<span id=\"footnotesource2\" class=\"refID\">\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"footnoteLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/jehovahs-witnesses\/faq\/lords-supper\/#footnote2\" data-anchor=\"#footnote2\">*<\/a>\u00a0However, here are some factors that should be considered.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p7\" class=\"p7 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"7\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"4\">\u00a0<\/span>Jesus instituted the Lord\u2019s Evening Meal on the date of the Jewish Passover, and he died later that same day. (<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/matthew\/26\/#v40026001-v40026002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"40026001-40026002\">Matthew 26:\u200b1,\u00a02<\/a>) This was no coincidence. The Scriptures compare Jesus\u2019 sacrifice to that of the Passover lamb. (<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/1-corinthians\/5\/#v46005007-v46005008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"46005007-46005008\">1\u00a0Corinthians 5:\u200b7,\u00a08<\/a>) The Passover was observed once each year. (<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/exodus\/12\/#v2012001-v2012006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"2012001-2012006\">Exodus 12:\u200b1-6;<\/a><a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/leviticus\/23\/#v3023005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"3023005\">\u00a0Leviticus 23:5<\/a>) Likewise, the Memorial of Jesus\u2019 death was observed once each year by the early Christians,<span id=\"footnotesource3\" class=\"refID\">\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"footnoteLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/jehovahs-witnesses\/faq\/lords-supper\/#footnote3\" data-anchor=\"#footnote3\">*<\/a>\u00a0and Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses follow that Bible-based pattern.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section4\" class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2 id=\"p8\" class=\"p8 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"8\">Date and time<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pGroup\">\n<p id=\"p9\" class=\"p9 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"9\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"5\">\u00a0<\/span>The pattern established by Jesus helps determine not only the frequency but also the date and time of the Memorial. He introduced the observance after sundown on Nisan 14, 33\u00a0C.E., according to the Bible\u2019s lunar calendar. (<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/matthew\/26\/#v40026018-v40026020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"40026018-40026020\">Matthew 26:18-\u200b20,<\/a><a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/matthew\/26\/#v40026026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"40026026\">\u00a026<\/a>) We continue to observe the Memorial on this date each year, following the practice of early Christians.<span id=\"footnotesource4\" class=\"refID\">\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"footnoteLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/jehovahs-witnesses\/faq\/lords-supper\/#footnote4\" data-anchor=\"#footnote4\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"p10\" class=\"p10 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"10\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"6\">\u00a0<\/span>Although Nisan 14, 33\u00a0C.E. was a Friday, the anniversary of that date might fall on a different day of the week each year. We determine the date that Nisan 14 falls each year using the same method as was used in the time of Jesus, rather than applying the method used for the modern Jewish calendar.<span id=\"footnotesource5\" class=\"refID\">\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"footnoteLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/jehovahs-witnesses\/faq\/lords-supper\/#footnote5\" data-anchor=\"#footnote5\">*<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section5\" class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2 id=\"p11\" class=\"p11 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"11\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6232\" src=\"https:\/\/jwforum.net\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/502015257_univ_cnt_1_md.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>Bread and wine<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pGroup\">\n<div id=\"f1\" class=\"east_left half\">\n<figure><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"p12\" class=\"p12 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"12\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"7\">\u00a0<\/span>For the new observance, Jesus used unleavened bread and red wine that were left over from the Passover meal. (<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/matthew\/26\/#v40026026-v40026028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"40026026-40026028\">Matthew 26:26-\u200b28<\/a>) Following his example, we use bread without leaven or added ingredients and plain red wine, not grape juice or wine that has been sweetened, fortified, or spiced.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p13\" class=\"p13 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"13\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"8\">\u00a0<\/span>Some denominations use bread with leavening or yeast, but leaven is often used in the Bible as a symbol of sin and corruption. (<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/luke\/12\/#v42012001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"42012001\">Luke 12:1;<\/a><a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/1-corinthians\/5\/#v46005006-v46005008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"46005006-46005008\">\u00a01\u00a0Corinthians 5:\u200b6-8;<\/a><a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/galatians\/5\/#v48005007-v48005009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"48005007-48005009\">\u00a0Galatians 5:\u200b7-9<\/a>) Thus, only bread free from leaven and other additives can be a fitting symbol for Christ\u2019s sinless body. (<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/1-peter\/2\/#v60002022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"60002022\">1\u00a0Peter 2:\u200b22<\/a>) Another practice not supported by the Bible is that of substituting unfermented grape juice for wine. Some churches do so because of their unscriptural prohibition against consuming alcohol.\u200b\u2014<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/1-timothy\/5\/#v54005023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"54005023\">1\u00a0Timothy 5:\u200b23<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section6\" class=\"section\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h2 id=\"p14\" class=\"p14 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"14\">Emblems, not literal flesh and blood<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pGroup\">\n<p id=\"p15\" class=\"p15 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"15\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"9\">\u00a0<\/span>The unleavened bread and red wine served at the Memorial are emblems, or symbols, of Christ\u2019s flesh and blood. They are not miraculously changed into or mixed with his literal flesh and blood, as some feel. Consider the Scriptural basis for this understanding.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p id=\"p16\" class=\"p16 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"16\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"10\">\u00a0<\/span>If Jesus had commanded his disciples to drink his blood, he would have been telling them to break God\u2019s law against consuming blood. (<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/genesis\/9\/#v1009004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"1009004\">Genesis 9:4;<\/a><a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/acts\/15\/#v44015028-v44015029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"44015028-44015029\">\u00a0Acts 15:28, 29<\/a>) Yet this could not be, for Jesus would never instruct others to violate God\u2019s law regarding the\u00a0<a class=\"pub-ijwbq\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/bible-teachings\/questions\/bible-about-blood-transfusion\/\" data-page-id=\"mid502013147\">sacredness of blood<\/a>.\u200b\u2014<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/john\/8\/#v43008028-v43008029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"43008028-43008029\">John 8:\u200b28, 29<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p id=\"p17\" class=\"p17 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"17\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"11\">\u00a0<\/span>If the apostles had been literally drinking Jesus\u2019 blood, he would not have said that his blood\u00a0<em>\u201cis to be<\/em>\u00a0poured out,\u201d indicating that his sacrifice was yet to occur.\u200b\u2014<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/matthew\/26\/#v40026028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"40026028\">Matthew 26:28<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p id=\"p18\" class=\"p18 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"18\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"12\">\u00a0<\/span>Jesus\u2019 sacrifice took place \u201conce for all time.\u201d (<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/hebrews\/9\/#v58009025-v58009026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"58009025-58009026\">Hebrews 9:\u200b25, 26<\/a>) However, if the bread and wine were changed into his flesh and blood during the Lord\u2019s Evening Meal, then those partaking would be repeating that sacrifice.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p id=\"p19\" class=\"p19 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"19\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"13\">\u00a0<\/span>Jesus said: \u201cKeep doing this in\u00a0<em>remembrance<\/em>\u00a0of me,\u201d not \u201cin\u00a0<em>sacrifice<\/em>\u00a0of me.\u201d\u200b\u2014<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/1-corinthians\/11\/#v46011024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"46011024\">1\u00a0Corinthians 11:24<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"p20\" class=\"p20 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" data-pid=\"20\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"14\">\u00a0<\/span>Those who believe in transubstantiation, that the bread and wine become Jesus\u2019 literal body and blood, base this doctrine on the wording of certain Bible verses. For example, in many Bible translations, Jesus is recorded as saying of the wine: \u201cThis\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0my blood.\u201d (<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/matthew\/26\/#v40026028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"40026028\">Matthew 26:28<\/a>) However, Jesus\u2019 words can also be translated as: \u201cThis\u00a0<em>means<\/em>\u00a0my blood,\u201d \u201cThis\u00a0<em>represents<\/em>\u00a0my blood,\u201d or \u201cThis\u00a0<em>signifies<\/em>\u00a0my blood.\u201d<span id=\"footnotesource6\" class=\"refID\">\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"footnoteLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/jehovahs-witnesses\/faq\/lords-supper\/#footnote6\" data-anchor=\"#footnote6\">*<\/a>\u00a0As he had often done, Jesus was teaching by using a metaphor.\u200b\u2014<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/matthew\/13\/#v40013034-v40013035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"40013034-40013035\">Matthew 13:34, 35<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section7\" class=\"section\">\n<h2 id=\"p21\" class=\"p21 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-pid=\"21\">Who partake?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pGroup\">\n<p id=\"p22\" class=\"p22 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-pid=\"22\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"15\">\u00a0<\/span>When Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses observe the Lord\u2019s Evening Meal, only a small fraction of us partake of the bread and wine. Why is that so?<\/p>\n<p id=\"p23\" class=\"p23 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-pid=\"23\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"16\">\u00a0<\/span>Jesus\u2019 shed blood established \u201ca new covenant\u201d that replaced the covenant between Jehovah God and the ancient nation of Israel. It includes, not all Christians, but only \u201cthose who have been called\u201d in a special way by God. (<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/hebrews\/9\/#v58009015\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"58009015\">Hebrews 9:\u200b15;<\/a><a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/luke\/22\/#v42022020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"42022020\">\u00a0Luke 22:20<\/a>) These ones will rule in heaven with Christ, and the Bible says that just 144,000 people receive that privilege.\u200b\u2014<a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/luke\/22\/#v42022028-v42022030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"42022028-42022030\">Luke 22:28-\u200b30;<\/a><a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/revelation\/5\/#v66005009-v66005010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"66005009-66005010\">\u00a0Revelation 5:\u200b9, 10;<\/a><a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/revelation\/14\/#v66014001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"66014001\">\u00a014:\u200b1,<\/a><a class=\"jsBibleLink jsHasModalListener jsNoScroll\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/bible\/study-bible\/books\/revelation\/14\/#v66014003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bible=\"nwtsty\" data-requested-bible=\"\" data-targetverses=\"66014003\">\u00a03<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p24\" class=\"p24 disableActiveState jsHasHighlightListener\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-pid=\"24\"><span class=\"parNum refID\" data-pnum=\"17\">\u00a0<\/span>In contrast to the \u201clittle flock\u201d of those called to rule with Christ, the vast majority of us hope to be part of \u201ca great crowd\u201d who will gain everlasting life on earth.
