{"id":853,"date":"2011-11-30T00:33:48","date_gmt":"2011-11-30T00:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jwforum.net\/news\/2011\/11\/30\/blood-free-kidney-transplant-carried-out-between-two-jehovahs-witnesses\/"},"modified":"2011-11-30T00:33:48","modified_gmt":"2011-11-30T00:33:48","slug":"blood-free-kidney-transplant-carried-out-between-two-jehovahs-witnesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jwforum.net\/portal\/blood-free-kidney-transplant-carried-out-between-two-jehovahs-witnesses\/","title":{"rendered":"Blood-free kidney transplant carried out between two Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Surgeons have performed a blood-free kidney transplant between Debra and Jade Gouldbourne, two Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses \u2013 despite the patients not being a donor match.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Doctors insisted on going ahead with the surgery, even though tests showed Debra\u2019s failing organ was not compatible with her daughter Jade\u2019s.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">It was made more complicated by the mother and daughter\u2019s faith, which dictates they cannot accept blood transfusions \u2013 meaning surgeons had to strictly limit blood loss.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">But, four months on, the social worker has fully recovered with no sign of the kidney being rejected.\u00a0<\/div>\n<p> <!--more--> <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">\u2018Accepting a kidney from my daughter has been a very emotional experience,\u2019 Ms Gouldbourne said.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">\u2018We built up to the surgery together, so we shared a huge emotional journey as well as the physical recovery.\u2019\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">The procedure, carried out at St George\u2019s Hospital in south London, is believed to be the first time an incompatible kidney transplant has been conducted between two Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Doctors removed some of the white blood cells in Ms Gouldbourne\u2019s body a month before going under the knife in order to successfully bypass the body\u2019s natural response of attacking incompatible organ tissue.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Jade, 27, added: \u2018Despite the disappointment of the compatibility tests, I was determined that if there was a way to make it work we would try.\u2019\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Her 50-year-old mother, from Catford, south London, was born with a condition that caused her kidneys to fail and received a first transplant in 1986.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Prof Neil Turner, chairman of Kidney Research UK, said it was \u2018extremely encouraging\u2019 that emerging treatments were helping to improve the compatibility of donors.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">&#8211;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">http:\/\/www.metro.co.uk<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Surgeons have performed a blood-free kidney transplant between Debra and Jade Gouldbourne, two Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses \u2013 despite the patients not being a donor match.
