Favor fresh food.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Try to purchase fresh food when possible.* Ruth, a mother of two in Nigeria, says: \u201cI usually go to the market very early in the morning when the food is fresher.\u201d Elizabeth, from Mexico, also shops at an open market. \u201cThere I can buy fresh fruits and vegetables, and I can pick them out myself,\u201d she says. \u201cI always buy fresh meat slaughtered that day. Inspect your food.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Ask yourself: \u2018Is the skin on my produce intact? Is the meat free of unusual odors?\u2019 If the food is prewrapped, inspect the packaging. Damaged packages can allow poisonous bacteria to enter the food.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">Chung Fai, who buys food at a supermarket in Hong Kong, says: \u201cIt is also necessary to check the expiration date printed on packaged food.\u201d Why? Experts warn that even if \u201cexpired\u201d food looks, smells, and tastes good, it can still make you sick.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">? Pack safely.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify\">If you use a reusable shopping bag or plastic bin, wash it out frequently with hot soapy water.
