Angela Merkel – Vladimir Putin and Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia

Chancellor Angela Merkel has asked the Russian President Vladimir Putin to work for the protection of human rights in his country. During her visit to Sochi, the chancellor named the rights of homosexuals in Chechnya and the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia, which have recently been banned there.

“The right to manifest is also part of a civil society,” Merkel said at a joint press conference with Putin. Added that it is important to protect the activity of the organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia. Merkel stressed the need to respect the right of public assembly and free operation of non-governmental organizations.

Reports emphasized that Putin would have been angered by critical issues. Kremlin’s chief Putin showed himself unusually thin-skinned, reacted indignantly to critical demands.
